NEWHAVEN

Newhaven is a small but historically significant port town in East Sussex, nestled at the mouth of the River Ouse where it meets the English Channel. It developed in the Middle Ages as a response to the silting up of nearby Seaford’s harbour, and its name—literally “new haven”—reflects its origins as a newly cut channel through the shingle to create a safer port.

One of its most prominent landmarks is Newhaven Fort, a Victorian-era coastal defence built in the 1860s. Today, it’s a family-friendly museum with immersive exhibits, including recreated WWI trenches and air-raid shelters, plus sweeping views of the Channel.
